 Tweetsie Railroad
NC has been a family attraction
bringing smiles to many children’s faces for
several decades. Historically, a railroad line
carried passengers and other important freight
through the High Country Mountains from
Boone NC
to places in East Tennessee. The railroad was
known as the East Tennessee & Western North
Carolina Railroad, abbreviated ET&WNC Railroad.
After operating for a short time, locals began
referring to the #12 steam locomotive as
“Tweetsie” because of the train’s characteristic
“Tweet Tweet” sound when coming into town or
departing from the depot.
After many productive decades, the railroad
eventually shut down its operations in 1950.
After being purchased by an out of state
collector, Tweetsie locomotive was eventually
returned to the High Country in 1957 and the theme park was created.
Since then, Tweetsie has been welcoming visitors
to its Wild West themed park and taking riders
on a wonderful three mile loop through
