The Blowing Rock
first opened for business in 1933 and is North Carolina’s oldest
attraction. Resting at an elevation of 4,000 feet, The
Blowing Rock offers visitors a glimpse at the
beautiful John’s River Gorge and the endless
peaks and oceans of mountains spanning the
horizon. Vacationers always love stopping by The
Blowing Rock as
the view is unlike any other in the area.
a Boone NC Attraction, garners
its name from a Cherokee Indian legend.
According to the story, a Chickasaw chieftain had
journeyed to the Blowing Rock area from lands
far away to ensure that his daughter would not
fall in love with a white settler. One day, the
Chickasaw maiden was sunbathing and daydreaming
atop a cliff near The Blowing Rock. She saw
a young Cherokee brave and immediately the two
fell deeply in love. However, the brake was
summoned back to his tribe to fight in other
regions. Torn by a duty to his brothers and a
love for the young Chickasaw princess, the
Cherokee brave leaped from rocky outcropping
overlooking the John’s River Gorge. The maiden
was devastated, but each day she prayed that the
brave
would return safely to her. One day, the
maiden was at the rock mourning her loss when
the sky turned a vibrant red color. With a large
gust of wind, the brave was blown back up to the
rock’s ledge, and into his lover’s arms.
Legend
has it that since that day, a strange wind pattern
has blown up and around The Rock. Traveling from the
gorge below, the wind follows an almost vertical
pattern over the rock, and sometimes causes the
snow in the wintertime to appear as if it is
falling upside down.
